The Columbus Foundation

DSOSF has become a Columbus Foundation Donor-Advised Fund

Since its inception in 2015, the DSOSF has been a fund of the First Community Foundation (FCF).  The FCF recently began a program by which donor advised funds within the FCF can move their assets to The Columbus Foundation (TCF).  After evaluating the advantages of such a transfer (more investment options, the security of having the assets in a large foundation with a four star Charity Navigator ranking, low administrative costs, and 501(c)3 status), the fund advisors of the DSOSF approved the transfer to TCF, which occurred on September 15 of 2019.  The DSOSF remains affiliated with the FCF and will make regular reports to the FCF.  The Columbus Foundation is the trusted philanthropic advisor® to 2,400 individuals, families, and businesses, who have created charitable funds and planned gifts to make a difference in the lives of others. Serving the region for more than 70 years, The Columbus Foundation is the seventh largest community foundation in the United States.

International Circle of Friends

The ICOF was founded in 2005 by P.B. and Jean Dye upon asking friends to bring items for the orphanage children on P.B.'s 50th birthday. In partnership with United Methodist Volunteers in Missions (UMVIM), they spent several years drawing annual funds and volunteers for their "Feeding the Children" program. Additionally, the ICOF worked with the Blue House Effect during those years to offer eight $2,500 scholarships to students who wished to attend university within the country. The ICOF continues to support the school and orphanage through monthly in-kind donations of food and supplies, as well as scholarship funds for several of the DSO’s best students.

First Community Church and Foundation

First Community Foundation has been greatly helpful in providing a platform for receiving general donations to the Dominica School and Orphanage. The church has had a ten year relationship with the DSO, sending high school students to the school, and assisting with the transfer of funds to the DSO.

City of Joy/Pittsfield Physicians

The City of Joy Aid Inc. has been a support of the DSO since 1994. It was founded by Marie Allizon in Lorton, VA after a visit to the orphanage inspired her to support these impoverished children. In 2018, a group of physicians led by Steve Kisiel in Pittsfield, MA began efforts to fund the construction of a new roof over the school's courtyard. The roof was completed in early 2019. This group has also provided scholarship funds to several DSO graduates over the years, allowing them to attend local universities and continue their education.

We can’t fix all of the problems in the Dominican Republic. But what we’re doing is a great start.
